Datix Cloud IQ

Since its inception in 2008, PSLS has offered an electronic patient safety reporting and learning system for health care staff and providers within BC’s health authority network.

In 2024, the BCPSLS Central Office team and partners began transitioning PSLS from its web-based application to a new, cloud-based application called Datix Cloud IQ (DCIQ).

The image below demonstrates the scope and breadth of the new software, listing the four toolkits (Capture, Evaluate, Implement, and Assess) along with their corresponding modules and tools, to support a comprehensive approach to reporting and learning from patient safety incidents, patient and family feedback, and more.

What is DCIQ?

Datix Cloud IQ (DCIQ) is a cloud-based software developed by RLDatix, the same vendor that developed PSLS’s previous—or “legacy”—software.

DCIQ offers modules to capture and evaluate patient safety incidents, patient and family feedback, and more. The modules support teams to strategize, implement, and assess learnings to support a continous loop of quality improvement.

DCIQ works in a similar way to the legacy system, but it’s faster, more streamlined, and has a fresh, updated look and feel

BCPSLS Central Office manged the DCIQ implementation for BC with input from the software vendor, the Ministry of Health, and health authority partners.

Why did PSLS move to the cloud?

The DCIQ software suite offers new modules and tools to support a strategic approach to reporting and learning from patient safety incidents.

The software is faster and easier to use, with a more modern look and feel.

DCIQ has improved functionality, including simplified location and program fields, so users don’t have to complete five different fields every time they report an incident.

The system is connected to Active Directory, which means users don’t have to enter their contact information every time they report or review an incident. It will also allow people to track their reports, while maintaining the ability to report anonymously if they choose.

The system is also integrated with the provincial PHN database, which enables PSLS to automatically populate patient details when a PHN is entered, saving time and reducing the risk of inaccuracies.

The new dashboards provide handlers and other leaders with up-to-date PSLS data at their fingertips. Dashboards, along with customizable and relevant data summary reports, help prioritize efforts and inform quality improvement activities.

When did BC start using the new PSLS?

Northern Health: March 1, 2024

Where can I learn how to use the new PSLS?

Your health authority’s staff intranet site and PSLS Coordinators are your best resources for training on PSLS.

There are also several new e-learning courses on LearningHub and iLearn. See e-learning modules to learn more.

Stakeholder engagement

Before implementing the new PSLS, the BCPSLS Central Office team partnered with health authority respresentatives and user groups to ensure the system would function as optimally as possible.

The team also reached out to specific users groups for feedback and testing of the new software, including:

  • surveys
  • focus groups
  • interviews
  • software demonstrations and testing
  • education sessions

The Central Office team continues to meet regularly with health authority partners and special user groups to inform ongoing enhancements and improvements to PSLS.
