E-learning Modules
BCPSLS Central Office currently offers several online modules for healthcare providers.
Patient Safety
- This course is for anyone in the BC healthcare system who might identify or report a patient safety issue
- 30 minutes, self-paced
- This course has been recognized as a Leading Practice by Health Standards Organization (HSO)
- After completing the course, you will be able to define patient safety terminology, identify types of safety events, and describe different ways to report a safety event
Handler role
- This course is for PSLS handlers and others responsible for safety incident follow-up
- 30 minutes, self-paced
- Recommended prerequisite: Patient Safety
- Learn about handler role and responsibilities, timeline expectations, reviewing incidents (based on Canadian Incident Analysis Framework) and fostering a culture of safety
Incidents
- This course is for PSLS handlers and others responsible for safety event follow-up
- 45 minutes, self-paced
- Recommended prerequisite: Handler Role
- Learn about reviewing incidents and documenting your review in the new PSLS
Tools and data
- This course is for PSLS handlers and others responsible for safety incident follow-up and/or analyzing PSLS data
- 30 minutes, self-paced
- Recommended prerequisite: Incidents, Feedback, or Safeguarding (depending on your role)
- Learn how to get the most out of PSLS by using tools to support your review process, manage your workflow, and learn more about incidents reported in your area
Vanessa’s Law
Vanessa’s Law regulations require hospitals to report serious adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and medical device incidents (MDIs) to Health Canada within 30 days of the event being documented within the hospital. In BC, this process is facilitated by PSLS.
In this course, you will learn:
- how to comply with Vanessa’s Law regulations
- how to correctly identify the types of adverse drug reactions and medical device incidents now mandated for reporting
- how to correctly report ADRs and MDIs in PSLS
- where to find information and alerts about unsafe products
Feedback
- This course is for Patient Care Quality Office (PCQO) staff in all health authorities
- 30-45 minutes, self-paced
- Learn how to use the Feedback module in PSLS to intake and process patient and family feedback in accordance with provincial legislation
Safeguarding
- This course is for staff in adult protection and other staff who have the responsibility to report and/or respond to suspected cases of adult abuse, neglect, or self-neglect under BC’s Adult Guardianship Act.
- 30-45 minutes, self-paced
- Learn how to use the Safeguarding module in PSLS (formerly called re:act)
